iBook G4 vs G3?

OS X Friendly
Thank god I procrastinated on buying thius refurbed 900Mhz 14" G3.

I'm not a big poweruser using iMovie or heavy into Photoshop, but I'd sort of like to try again. Flash and all.

But money is always an issue, now I am pondering should I still buy the G3 which dropped 200 or buy the new G4 which is at the same refurbed price.

I see the G4 wont have Classic which is a little bad but not crippling since it will only effect my Unreal Tourney. (not 2003)

Who wants to persuade me to either model...

Tell us specifically what your needs are. Your needs, not frivolous stuff like Unreal Tournament. ;)

MMMM cookies.

I use Macromedia MX and would like to do more in Flash soon. I need a laptop to take to work on third shift. I hate sitting in front of a barebones PC without the ability to install useful software I can mess with. I use Photoshop as well.

The more I read the less and less I want to stay on the G3 side. I want to buy into the hype of the mac announcement. My last mac was the iMac Graphite SE right when it was announced. 4 yrs later it is still a great machine for my needs.

OS 9 is of no importance to me no more.

**The machine is used mostly for a personal use as well. EMail, browsing, banking, iTunes...

It is going to be a G4 purchase, I don't see the purpose in having a G3 now.

Okay, good, then I don't have to give you any more reasons to get a G4 instead of a G3.

BTW, I like your quotation.

Now the hunt is on to see who offers the most freebies with it. So far MacMall is in the lead. I bought my last iMac from them.

You can still run classic, unless I missed something.... You just can't boot into OS 9.
Having looked over the G4 iBook specs, really the only things that have changed are built in Bluetooth, Airport Extreme, USB 2, and of course the G4.
Also note that Panther comes installed, something that probably won't be included in the refurbished G3 version.

One note though, Apple fails to mention both the Velocity Engine that the G4s are famed for (see concurrent thread for more info) and the iBook's notable battery life. If the G4 version doesn't include the Velocity Engine, then I doubt it is much better than a G3, if at all. Also, I expect the battery life of the G4 iBook has dropped, but since Apple hasn't provided any info on this at this point, I can't say that with certainty.

-EDIT-
I missed it, Apple says the battery will last for 6 hours. Yeah, right .
They said that about the G3 version, and I only get 4. Note though that both eh 12" and the 14" now have the same battery life.
ALSO, Tony Hawk Pro Skater now comes with every iBook, that's new! :)
