Hello. One day I installed some new upgrade of some kind and it said I have to restart. I restarted and that was 2 weeks ago and it has not come back since. I turn it on and I hear the chime and everything but then the apple appears on the gray screen as usual, and then where the apple was a box appears with what looks like colorful static and thats it. It just sits there. I have tried NUMEROUS things. Such as holding the shift key down, cmd+option-p-r combo all of that and nothing is working. I got it in 2004 and so the apple people want to charge me $50 just to even speak to someone which I simply dont have being a struggling college student. So if you have any advice it would be appreciated. Oh and I also no longer have the original CDs that came with it. I have probably moved 5 times since then and somewhere along the way they must have been lost. Thank you.

Howdy!

Try this-unplug power cord, then remove battery for 5 minutes. Replace battery, plug in power cord-see what happens.

2. Hold down open apple + s key when restarting. If you get to single user mode (white text on black screen) type the following:

fsck (space) -fy

Let it run and when it is finsihed, type reboot (or restart-can't remember which)

Good luck!

You really do need to get an Install CD/DVD if pos, any would do like a Panther, Tiger or Leopard as then you could load it holding down the "C" key and at get to Disk Utility via the options menu at the header which would allow you to Repair Permissions at least.
Have you also tried option, command, 'O' and 'F' and start...? This is a Firmware repair.. when you get to the screen with text, type.. reset-nvram.. the type... reset-all.

I took it to the apple store and they said my hard drive is dead. Will any of this stuff work if that is the case? I am just trying to get everything off of it and then I will throw it out a window for all I care. But I am worried that since they said my hard drive is shot that means my stuff is gone forever.
