Ibook HD Noise

Hi guys,

I just bought an old clamshell G3 Ibook. It is my first foray into Apple products and I was wondering if the whining noise that appears to be coming from the hard drive is normal. It's quite loud and distracting. I was considering replacing the hard drive but maybe there is another cause for the noise?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Dan.

Hard drives tend to develop and ambient (meaning always present even when the drive is not reading/writing) whining noise as they get old. Replacing it is your best bet at this point.

If it were a tower, there are hard driver enclosures - a product called "Silent Drive" www.quietpc.com - to isolate the noise. I've used that Silent Drive product on a number of PCs which allowed me to reuse old hard drives that make a lot of noise. On a Mac, you'd just need an available CD-ROM bay. With laptops, you might have to just bite the bullet and buy a new drive.

When working on the iBook, prop the back end up slightly with a piece of foam or a small book. See if the noise stops.
