iBook Memory

Does the iBook 500 have 2 memory slots like the PowerBook, or is it soldered to the logic board?

If so, how can I access the other slot?

The iBook 500 has 1 single slot, and depends on the model, has 64MB or 128MB of RAM soldered onto the motherboard. Thus the max memory you can have (if using the 128MB version) is 128 + 512 = 640MB.

To clarify, that is:

64mb or 128mb base memory soldered onto the board

AND:

1 SO-Dimm memory slot.

You can access the memory slot by:
- Power off
- Lift up the keyboard by sliding back the tabs next to the 'esc' and 'f12' keys. You might have to unlock the catch between the 'f5' and 'f6' keys by giving it a half-turn with a small screwdriver.
- Underneath the keyboard is the mounting for the Airport card. You can remove the screws on this plate to access the memory slot. There is a diagram on the under-side of the keyboard.

Also, its fair to point out that I've seen a lot of people on the boards who have encountered trouble due to buying super-cheap memory. Get a warranty, or at least use a reputable source.
