iBook processor fan

Hey y'all,

I've got a first gen 500Mhz dual USB iBook and the processor fan is starting to get *really* loud. One of the things I loved about the iBook when I first got it was how much quieter it was than my previous notebooks. But over the last year its just gotten louder and louder.

Hence my question: has anyone managed to change the processor fan on these? Or is this a back to Apple kinda problem?

Cheers,

C

Well, I don't think the fan is supposed to be very loud... are you sure it's not your imagination? I mean, my mom's 500-MHz first-gen Combo Drive is still going strong, the fan sounds quieter than ever (I guess comparing it to my LCD iMac still makes it sound a bit quieter anyway...)

... I'm not imagining it. Sometimes I can hear the bloody thing squeek as it goes around. I know a processor fan shouldn't be loud, but they do with age. Most of the PCs I have get to that point eventually ... they tend to be on a *lot* :) ... and its an easy task to change a processor fan in a tower case, but a bit trickier in a notebook :( ... but I don't want to go taking the thing apart if I don't stand a chance of changing the fan (for example if the fan used in the iBooks is a non-standard part that I can't get hold of) ... so I was hoping someone else (who knows something about HW) has tried this?

Cheers,

C

Huh... well, I know where the fan IS on the iBook, but replacing it is probably a warranty-voiding repair. Do you have AppleCare? If so, they will most likely do that for you. It is still within the year hardware warranty, so if you can get them to think it's a serious problem, they will replace it even if you don't have AppleCare.
