iBook question

I just picked up another ibook that was going cheap, wanted it for spares for my other ibook g4 in case anything packs up. The problem i have with both ibooks is that they start up and shut down fine, operate brilliantly but they will not restart. When i try this i get the question mark symbol indicating that there is no harddrive present. When i force quit the machine and then fire them up they work fine, just are unable to restart. Anyone else have this problem as it seems a bit coincidental that they both do this. They work fine and are great little workhorses just wont restart?

Make sure that in 'System Preferences->Startup Disk' your main boot drive is the selected option.

Probably already is, but it's worth checking.

I think I helped you another thread with your other ibook and I helped you determine it was most likely the HDD controller on the logic board. More than likely this one is the same thing. Hope you can return it or else you'll have to live with it working that way.

Hi again djackmac, Yep, that was me. Just seems a coincidence that i have 2 ibooks that do the exact same thing. Have googled this with the expectation of at least finding someone else having the same problem without much luck.

I paid about £30 for the ibook as it had the "fans of death" symptoms, i initiallly wanted it as the case was in better nick than mine and i was going to part out the good bits on ebay to get my money back (the airport extreme card, 1gb RAM, 80gb HD etc).

I decided to be a bit brave and reflow the solder on the two dodgy pins on the board (GPU chip i think?) the ibook had been previously shimmed by the guy i bought it off but would not work anymore. I held the soldering iron on each pin for a few seconds. Put the casing back on and it booted up within 45 seconds. Have been running it now for 2 weeks and its faultless apart from the restarting issue.

Seems to good a machine to part out now:)
