iBook to Windows Network - New word for Hell?

I just bought a new iBook G4 (best money I ever spent) and am trying to connect it to my College (Windows) network.

I connect it up and click Network, and all of the computers come up, but when I try to access their shared folders (Only the PCs - Macs come up fine), I get a lovely graphite dialog box telling me that 'The Alias ***** could not be opened, because the original could not be found.'

Also, now when I connect to another iBook just via Ethernet, the other computer shows up, and I can access their folders, but they cannot access mine (the same thing happens).

Can anyone help?

same happens to me.. sometimes... sometimes it works... have a look at the preferences i posted (the thread with the powerbook to internet) ... at least i can access the folders most of the time
