Inventor of the Egg Wave
I have seen a little disdain, and a little approval for apple's new apps and protocol (address book is not new but heavily upgraded). I'd like to voice my opinion on Apple's strategy behind these products.
For years - basically since the Newton was dropped, everyone has clammored for the next apple PDA. Last expo the big rumor was the iwalk, one of the best fakes (?) I've ever seen. Well in congruence with the digital hub strategy, Apple is now poised to...do whatever they want.
I'm not sure if people realize how cool it is to have built in functionality with a bunch of different cell phones/palm compatible devices. They have created a giant wedge to fill the void here, folks. And it puts them in a great position to sit on the fence of the PDA/NewDigitalAgeProduct market.
Think about the present add campaign. Those who are considering switching will find it much easier to do when they can easily run their contacts, calander, etc from the start. Apple is basically using the PDA companies to make the PDA for them (figuratively).
Also, these products round out the foundation for any PDA Apple might decide to release later on. I personally think it's a long-shot that they would do that, but it at once creates real useability, and lays the road for future "stuff".
I have not used 10.2, and was not even able to make out the picture from my stream this morning, but from what I have read/heard today and recently, I think these developments are very exciting.
Now....someone please start a thread on potential security holes in rendezvous!
