iChat to C ICQ

That's cool... ICQ had better add in AIM support if AIM is supporting the ICQ protocol. ICQ is my messenger of choice, I really don't want to see it overshadowed by AIM

Microsoft was the one who wanted to open the market when it introduced MSN Messenger. AOL prohibited MSN to use the AOL protocol.

Now that AOL has started to use its monopolistic powers to compete with Yahoo and MSN, I guess MS won't let Apple incorporate MSN Messenger's protocols that easily.

Also, interoperability like AIM and ICQ are going to get won't be as easily possible with other formats (AIM and ICQ use the same protocols nowadays). And the last thing Apple wants in their products is complexity.

But can you tell me which ports I need to forward in my router to support file transfers with iChat?

4020 as some documents on the net say. AIM uses 5190, apparently. But you should be able to see open ports with "/Applications/Utilities/Network Utility" (try Portscan on localhost).

Guess it's 5190 for AIM functionality and 5191 to 5193 for Rendezvous (which you don't need to open on your router, since Rendezvous is for local communications only).

AOL owns ICQ, it only makes sense. Why doesn't anyone else know this?

Anyways... I'm glad to see this since ICQ is my primary IM service.

Yes, AOL does own ICQ. They have been working on integrating them for some time. In fact I believe as of the last current release of ICQ they use the same protocol. Although one large factor that has been limiting the interoperabiltiy in the past is that they've run on two completely seperate infrastructures. The networks have run in parallel with no communication between them. They are just now getting to build the bridge between them.

I'm wondering how this is going to work for those of us who already have both an AIM screenname and ICQ number?

Gee... you guys really spend a lot of time on the internet to keep the rest of us posted. Your titles should be changed to iJournalist.

Thanks guys. Great job. Appreciate the news and updates. Should have thanked you guys sooner.

Next up, iChat supporting IRC?

As I mentioned before, I don't think Apple will support formats/protocols that won't interact with other iChat users. They can include ICQ as soon as AOL makes interoperability transparent there, i.e. every ICQ user (using the newest build) can contact an AIM user easily. This won't happen with IRC (and other protocols) for obvious reasons.

If you have an AIM and an ICQ number, I'm sure you'd just keep both. I doubt they're going to attempt to combine the two systems, at least not right away. RIght now they are more likely just creating a bridge between the two networks to allow them to communicate, not combine into one network. AIM and ICQ are structured quite differently. I just hope they take the path of ICQ in assigning everyone a numeric user ID allowing them to use any nickname with that. The AIM system allowing one unique nickname to be used only once is terrible, you end up with people being forced to choose nonsensical crap that makes no sense, and I really don't want to be forced to that.
