icon and file-association TROUBLE

Hmmm, I installed Virex 7.0
now .RTF documents have a blank page icon instead of the standard TextEdit RTF icon, and double clicking them opens one of my IRC programs??!! LOL

I have to drag them to the dock, into textEdit to open.

Also, Word v.X makes new beautiful OS X word icons, but Excel v.X still makes the ugly old Excel for OS 9 icon. How is this fixed?

How are file association and icon creation by applications handled in OS X???

Select a .rtf file and do 'Show Info' on it. In the drop down menu, select "Open with Application." You can then change the Application .rtf files will open with in there. This works on all file types, not just .rtf, too. Pretty useful, a lot nicer than how we had to ResEdit files in OS 9 to change what they opened in :)
 
heheh, I figured that out myself like 10 minutes after posting the question........

but..........

I heard that this solution does not work if the document was originally associated with a classic app.
