IE on MACOSX with NT Proxy.

Hi,
I'm trying to run Internet explorer on the MAC to talk through our proxy server, running on NT4.
since we upgraded to MACOSX everytime I try to connect through the proxy server, I get prompted for username and password. I enter these and it locks the NT account out.
This used to work fine on MACOS9 and still works within Virtual PC.
I have gone through all the settings to make sure no old passwords are stored in the IE setups for proxy, I've made sure that everything points to the right areas, but still it will not play.

so I thought I'd set the MAC to go via our Firewall instead - but I could find no way to setup 2 gateways, the MAC already being a different subnet from the firewall. And also no way to setup manual routes without being at UNIX level and knowing the root password ( which I cannot find this out anywhere ).
I have looked on the Apple support site but it gave me no clues, so I'm hoping someone out there can help.

Many thanks.
