If these guys could do it...

I don't like the idea of paying significantly more money than, for instance, a 12" PowerBook for a portable computer with a smaller screen, tiny keypad and much lower performance, even if it is "teensie weensie".

In what possible situations would you really need a computer like this, really?

Lots and lots.

The point isn't really size as such.

The point is convenience:
  • Being able to have a computer available all the time that you can just pull out of your pocket.
  • Being able to have a device that instantly turned on and off (don't think the OQO can actually do this)
  • Being able to listen to listen to audiobooks on the train etc. while the device sits in your pocket

In fact, I don't need (or even want) a full Computer/OS.

I just want a device I can use to:
  • Listen to music/audiobooks on while I'm on the train
  • Watch video
  • Read PDF files
  • Transfer photos to from my camera
  • Edit text files
  • Maintain appointments/contacts
  • Connect to a projector and give presentations (using something like keynote)
  • Contact my friends on the go (ideally videochat, but phone or email would do)
  • Look at web pages

A more advanced Treo phone is a closer fit than the OQO. The ideal portable device doesn't exist (yet) - I'm just hoping that Apple's paying attention and gets there first.

definitely no argument - there are much better products for the money.
BUT.
Having a full on computer like that, in your pocket, or wherever would be pretty convenient. Think about the small form factor - I used to take the train to work. It gets crowded. opening a laptop on a crowded train is miserable, and goodluck with the typing when you have 0 elbow room. the OQO would do nicely here.
also, having a portable system (that small!) when on a trip - download your digi pics right to the computer, don't worry about having to load to your ipod temporarily, or have multiple memory cards.
don't have to worry about leaving your laptop in your hotel room when you're out - either throw it in your pack, or stash in the small in room safe. no worries.

I don't think it's a replacement for a laptop, or desktop by any means, but it's got its niche as far as I'm concerned.

I think there are a lot of great uses. If they could do a powerpc (OS X) version - or if this new cherryOS works as it's supposed to, that would be cool.

course then I'd need a thousand+ laying around that I really didn't need for anything else....

here is my first reaction when i saw it:
nice looking, tiny, 256mb is not enough ram

here is my first reaction when i saw the price:
HOLY %$#@!!! 2000 dollars for that, way too much for the specs. yeah i know it is tiny, but way too expensive.

For me, the form factor puts this in completely different category. Having the equivalent of a desktop in my pocket creates a new, much broader, definition of portability, one that's really appealing. I can't imagine why I would ever NOT have this thing at hand. I can live with the small hard drive by getting an external drive. Having the dock let's me do away with the negatives. For what I do, I don't need the fastest cpu. With FireWire, USB, bluetooth, and wifi, I'm connected.

I can even deal with the expense, but I don't want to run a PC and Mac office, and can't see living without the Mac.

It's time for Apple to apply their vaunted engineering and user interface expertise and get into this market.

The OQO, IMO, is a lot of flash if you ask me. I thought is was cool in the beginning, when I heard about it almost 2-3 years ago. I also thought, "Well, the design is nice...let's hope they hit the projected price point of just-over-1G." Then it was released. Oh...My...GOD IT'S EXPENSIVE!!!!

I don't care how nice the design is. For what it is (Transmeta CPU @ 1GHz, 256 MB RAM, and a lot less other features), it's way too expensive. I'm hoping the FlipStart PC from Vulcan will be better than the !!OH-Q-NO!! :p when it comes out. From what I've seen, the specs are way better than the OQO, even if the design isn't anything to write home about. I especially love the fact that you don't have to open the device all the time since it has that little screen you can use for e-mail, music, etc., allowing for extended battery life.

Now if Apple came out with something like this..... ;)
