iMac 20" core do slow wireless

Hi

I have just bought an iMac 20" core duo and it detected my wireless LAN with no problem (running a Linksys Wireless G WRT54G firmware v4.20.7). My problem is that when using the internet, the speed is somewhre from 0 to 30KB/s which is very little. My Dell Laptop which is also on the wireless LAN can do 120KB/s with no problem. I have the two computers standing right next to each other so the network strength should be the same.

I have tried various channels on the router which didn't change the behaviour.

Any suggestions about what I can do to increase the speed?

Thanks in advance

I solved the problem myself. It seems the iMac has problems with WPA-PSK authentication. I changed the wireless router to use WEP authentication and now Safari can use the full 2Mb internet connection

Out of curiosity, are you running 10.4.6? If not, you might want to update to that as it might fix any bug that there might have been with WPA/WPA2.

I have updated the system to the newest release 10.4.6 build 8I1119. This has no effect on the problem. The switch from WPA-PSK to WEP 64bit seems to fix the problem.

Don't know if this might help, but have you tried running OnyX on your computer? Maybe it could fix something regarding the throughput and encryption?

IF that doesn't work, then maybe it's something that Apple needs to fix. Best bet would be to submit this as a bug to Apple so that it might be fixed in the next release.
