I think my old room mate tried to screw with the firmware to install some new program and has screwed up my mac. I use to turn it on then have to type in boot and then it would boot into OS8 but now it says it does not recognize bootr or boot. Can anyone tell me how to fix this

The Mac should boot from a drive by default, you shouldn't have to type a boot command manually. But the command to use in newer firmware versions is 'mac-boot'.
If that doesn't work, try 'reset-nvram' and then 'reset-all'. That should reset any parameters in the nvram and restart the computer.
