iMac Doesn't Boot From CD's

Hi, I bought a used iMac and had to replace the HDD a week after using it as it died. I got a new HDD and installed it. I did not get any software with the Mac. I bought myself Mac OS9.1, Mac OSX10.0 and managed to borrow a pre 2001 iMac system restore cd. The problem is I need to install an OS. I put in my OS9.1 or Restore CD. I hold C when booting. They both begin to load. I get no logo. but the screen changes to a different shade of grey and freezes. The power button on the front of the iMac is frozen too. If I start from the OSX10 CD it doesn't load all the way (missing OS9 fonts or something?). The CD ROM drive worked in the first week of use and loads the CD's to a certain extent. I have tried a few OS9 CD's. All with the same problem. I have reset NVRAM, PRAM. The battery is fine and the HDD is set to master.
