I am looking for an external hardrive for my imac G3 which has both USB an Firewire ports. I would like not only to transfer data, photos onto the external device but also to use it as an automatic backup. Please can you suggets suitable makes and models. I have been looking at Iomega and LaCie about 250mb storage. Thanks.

Firewire definitely, since your USB ports are version 1.1, which is VERY slow. TOO slow, simply put.

When going FireWire, I'd personally go with a cheapo external enclosure and a fitting harddrive that you can buy separately. It's easy to put the things together. If you truly want preconfigured, I'd go with Maxtor or LaCie personally.

And you mean 250 GB, of course. :)

250 GB of course (typo or trying to multitask). Thanks for the advice, but what is an 'external enclosure' and what would you recommend and what is a 'fitting hard drive'? Do you men one that suits the 'extrenal enclosure'? Excuse my ignorance!

you can buy a pre made external drive, or make your own. they both have pluses and minuses. the premade sometimes come with software and even a nice button to push to do a backup, as well as some nicer looking cases. as far as building your own, i would start here(hope this works) and then find a desktop hard drive on sale. then you add the hard drive to the case, close it up and connect it to the mac, and then use disk utility to format it.
