Imac G5 middle screw?

I went to open my Imac today to upgrade the RAM, had no problems with the two screws on the left and right. However, the middle screw is just turning & turning.

If I turn it anti-clockwise to loosen it, it just turns & turns.

If I turn it clockwise to tighten it, it just turns & turns.

What's up with this? I've had previous experience in opening Imacs & have not encountered this before, anyone else had any similar problems?

It's essential for work reasons I get in to the Mac to put the RAM in before tomorrow.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the screw is stripped.

I'm not familiar with the machine but can you pry up the edges and then try to loosen the screw? That will put some upward (outward) pressure on the screw you're attempting to remove and help it come out.

Some screws don't come completely out, but you can still take off the lid. If the screw is stripped, you might want to bring it in, if it's under warranty. Traditionally, you can drill through the center of a screw to remove it, but that would probably void your AppleCare.
