iMac G5 won't burn CDs

My new iMac (bought maybe 4 months ago) won't burn CDs. I can create a "burn" folder, but when I ask it to go ahead and burn, it comes back and says "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occorred (Error code 0x8002006D).

When I just insert a new blank CD (R/RW), the disk utility says: Total Capacity: 0 Byes, Write Ability: Read Only (CD-RW).

When I insert a blank CD (R/RW), the disc utility says Total Capacity: 0 Byes; Write Ability: Read Only (CD-RW) as if the disc had already been burned, but I'm sure it has not.

A friend looked at it and thought there may be something wrong with the drive itself, but maybe to try "Toast" first. I'm hesitant to buy "Toast" if I don't really need it.

Any information greatly appreciated!

trying Toast is a good first step. I find with these things you need to find out what it is not, rather than what it is. Perhaps I shouldn't say this, but if your friend has Toast, maybe temporarily install it on your mac to see if it works. You could also try downloading and installing Dragon Burn 30 day trial.

I've come up with a few other things to try, to rule out various aspects of softweare/hardware:

1. what happens if you try to burn a CD through iTunes or something? do you still get errors?

2. Try to rule out is the media itself. try a different brand. I found I was getting strange "hardware" errors when i used Princo discs, but since I switched to verbatum and Imation I've had no issues. optical discs are not something you should buy cheap brands of unless you plan on only using them once or twice, then throwing them away. TDK, Sony, Imation, Verbatum are all good brands I've had no probs with.

3. Try slowing down the burn speed to 2x and see if it burns. If i use cheaper disks I can't burn at maximum speed on mine.

4. one last resort is a CD drive cleaner like this. could be dust that's causing it, but I doubt it unless you shoved pop tarts in your drive!

I've found my iMac's drive is more sensitive than any burner I've had in the past. Perhaps because of the vertical-ness of it. Let us know how you go!

good luck!

Thanks for the thorough reply. In researching a few other threads, I found someone with a similar problem, though on a G4. The angels sang for him when he tried erasing the disc first. I tried that and it did work, but only on a RW disc, since the R only discs are seen as already having been burned.

iTunes was a no-go. "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

I will try dragon burn next. Then maybe drag the computer down to the Mac store. Ugh.

Thanks for your help!

This allows me to burn audio disks again.

Thanks

I believe that your iMac will only burn CD-R or CD-RW, and NOT CD+R or CD+RW.

A drive cleaner is worth a try.
