imac screen problem

cfleck

tired
i have this lovely pink imac that has decided to be a pain in my neck. first the hard drive failed. no big deal. just replaced it. thing is, before i replaced it the screen went crazy. basically, it now has a weird tilt on the screen that cant be fixed in the display properties and every word, image, anything on the screen is stretched and blurred.

it is definately a hardware issue, but i dont know much about this kind of problem. oh, also, if i open a large window (like safari) the blurriness clears up. so anyway, if anyone has any idea what the problem is or thinks they know how to fix it i would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

any chance you are using silk or have been messing with your anti-aliasing prefs in any way? just taking a stab in the dark here, but if different software gets rid of it, it's got to be in your settings and not in the monitor. you did say that you have tried to reset your display prefs to default, right?

does this occur when booted in os 9 as well?

its not just any app. it is any app with a big window and non complex animations it seems. sometimes safari wont fix it depending on the page i have loaded up.

i would try os9 on it, but i have a very small hard drive right now and i dont have the room to spare really. what is this silk thing?

silk added anti aliasing to apps back before the system did. if you don't know what it is, then it couldn't be an issue. sorry i'm not being any real help here.

thats ok. i dont know that i expect anyone to be able to help. but i figured i'd never know unless i tried.

just out of curiosity, have you tried any disk repairs? disk utility would be a start. the only repair program that comes to mind that specifically checks monitor stuff is techtool pro.

just a guess here. could a magnet have fallen off of the monitors yoke? or could the yoke assembly have come loose from the tube. BTW these are not things to check if you are not familiar with TV and the power involved. (assuming you have a CRT)

You say it is a hardware issue but then say it clears up with large windows. This would lead me back towards a software issue.

anyways
good luck

I had a problem with the screen on my family's iMac, and although it didn't sound quite like yours, upgrading the Firmware fixed the problem.
I would make sure you have the latest version of Firmware for your iMac installed. These can be found on Apple's site somewhere, I don't remember off the top of my head.

well, i was right about the hardware part, cuz it no longer works at all. the monitor is now a black screen all the time. as soon as i get the go ahead, i'm taking it apart and giving it a look-see

Um...unplug the iMac for a few hours before you take it apart and start messing with the screen - the CRT stuff holds a big charge, and it takes a good while for it to discharge even after you've unplugged it.

Just tryin to keep ya from shocking yourself.
