iMac won't boot with new drive?

Today I replaced the 10G drive in my iMac G3 with a 80G drive. It will not boot from the CD's(either OS 9 or X). I tried changing the jumper settings but no good. I keep getting the flashing folder/Question Mark.

I put the old drive back in so at least I have a working Mac for the moment.

What else can I try. I am running OS 10.3.9.

Assuming the new drive is default formatted for a PC. Your iMac is trying to find a bootable partition that is why you are getting the ? with the folder.
Does your CD's boot the iMac with the older HD in?
Essential you will need to get the new drive formatted in OSX to use it as a bootable drive?

Did you hold down the "C" key while trying to boot? Your iMac probably tried to boot from the harddrive – which obviously doesn't have an operating system installed.

Fryke,

Yes I tried holding the C key with no results.

Powermac,

My mac started right up with the old drive in, so I did not try to boot from the discs.
I thought if I could boot from the disc, I could format the drive with OS X.
