iMac won't recognize blank cd/dvd media

I have an iMac that's a few years old and has developed a problem reading or recognizing blank CDs and DVDs.

This has been a problem for a while that I thought was due to a faulty DVD drive (the one that the iMac shipped with), so I worked around it (I have a Macbook Pro as well that burns CD/DVDs with no issues). The iMac can read CDs and DVDs that have content (eg. music cds), but not blanks.

Last night I tried an external burner, thinking this would work, but the same issues. It could play a music CD, but the iMac wouldn't recognize a blank in the external burner either.

I've ruled out the media. I took the unrecognized blank DVD and put it into the Macbook and burned photos on it through my Airport... no problems.

At least I eliminated the hardware and media issues... so now I believe it is something in the software or settings. Any help in pointing me to a possible solution will be appreciated! I've searched the web, but found nothing recent.

Oh yes, the drives and blank media are recognized in System Profiler... they just don't show up in the Finder window and as a result, I can't burn anything. I have no problems using the keyboard to eject the blank either... baffling.

I'm running:
iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
MAC OS 10.6.8

I have run WD external HDs off the iMac in the past, and use an external NexStar dock for my HD (for Time Machine).

Thanks in advance!

(PS: I googled my problem, and the search results took me here, so I signed up.)

Hmmm, I guess I have to keep digging. I'm happy that my Macbook still behaves properly so I'm not completely stuck.
