With the sizes of HDDs increasing and the prices dropping, most people started to have their own, little video library on their disk. The now official DivX 4 Codec (since it was completely rewritten) and various file sharing networks, together with DVD-ROMs and software you need to rip your DVDs to DivX (allthough not on the Mac at the moment, but will be coming), a dream hatched in my mad brain.
iMovie 3. Like iTunes, but for movies. Drop in your DVD and hit the "rip" button! It would be as legal or illegal as ripping your own AudioCDs I guess (please correct me if I am wrong, but please in a kind manner)! I don't know about Macrovision, I guess this would be a problem since the decryption might be illegal. Well, anyhow, of course it's a bit more complex since ripping a DVD is not that easy (you have to know what you rip), but Apple would get it right, I am sure. If you need HDD space, copy it to a CD but let iMovie 3 keep track of it. And if it wouldn't be enough, iMovie 3 also let's you cut/make your own movies, like iMovie 2.
They could use the opensource DivX codec OR create a new Quicktime codec based on DivX, something like 3IVX, only better. With full Altivec support for post-image enhancement etc. etc.
Oh man...that would be so cool.......
