iMovie Backups?

I just bought a camcorder and I am in the process of digitizing all my families old super 8 tapes. Everything is going great and I am using iDVD to create DVDs of all the old tapes. But I have a question about my iMovie footage. Each tape is about 2 hours long, so the final file size is around 24GB. I have a 300GB external hard drive but I have a lot more tapes to do and I still want to save the raw .dv footage for possible future editing. I know you can do this within iDVD to be able to make multiple copies of a DVD.

So, is there a way to archive the .dv files so that they will fit on a DVD? The tapes are pretty old and I don't want to reimport the video everytime I might want to re-edit a movie.

I have used this software to backup hard disks onto DV tape, as they have quite a bit of storage space. It would allow you to have the data on a fresh tape. www.coolatoola.com is the link I have.

DV Backup LE is a MacOS X application which lets you use your domestic digital DV device as a data backup device. You can use DV Backup to store over 17GB of data per hour of tape, depending on the level of protection you require to allow recovery from tape errors and the recording speed (SP/LP) you us. Backups can also be compressed to increase the use of available tape space.

DV Backup LE works with most DV and Digital8 DV devices. It also works with most DVCAM and some DVCPRO decks which support larger 3 hour tapes, providing a corresponding capacity increase of around 50GB per tape for certain devices supporting up to 4 hours 40 minutes of recording time (recording on 184min DVCAM tapes in DV SP mode giving 4.6 hours of recording time).

DV Backup LE automatically remotely controls the DV device, no user intervention is needed to position the tapes or otherwise control the DV device, all tape operations are entirely automatic and hands-free.
