iMovie not as bad as I feared

Several lifetimes ago I was a broadcasting major. So I've been around film and video for a long time.

I'm by no means a pro, but over the years I've done film editing on flatbed's and video editing on Avid, Premier, Final Cut Pro, and now iMovie.

At first iMovie was fustrating as all hell... but after banging my head on it for 2 weekends I've decided that it is alright.

I can now move fairly fast in it. I can probably move faster in it than Final Cut, but I think the reason is because iMovie has so many fewer features that I don't waste time micro-tweaking transition settings, etc.

Does anyone know if there are more transitions available for iMovie? I kind of miss the iris all of the other sofware editors had. iMovie would be awesome with just a few more transitions and effects.

Also it would be great to have more positioning control over text... For now I am cheating by importing text from Photoshop... I guess it is cool that I can at least do that.

Apple has an "expansion pack" for iMovie with extra downloads. Don't know where it is exactly, but I'd try www.apple.com/imovie for starters.

I think there's a company that sells a pack of iMovie extras, but again, I don't remember the name. Try a google search.

Yeah, I'd say you're late...you've got a kinda weird system here. Most people start with the simple(iMovie) and move to the difficult/confusing(Final Cut), but you seem to be going the other way...

Yeah... With my new G4 I'm committed to sticking to the "out of box" setup as much as possible.

I guess I just don't want to add any weird stuff that will cause Apple's updates any greif. I figure they are still so busy doing the basics that they probably don't have time to test/debug weird stuff.

I'm probably just a bit more conservative on this than I ever was on OS's 7-9 because I was 100% confident that I could fix any issues introduced by the OS...

I'm also trying to keep my eye on when it might be okay to convert my Mom to OS X.

Go to versiontracker.com and search for iMovie. Slick Transitions are supposed to be really nice. They were cool enough to give some free. Very nice stuff.
