iMovie picture import problem

I have just upgraded to iLife4 and find that iMovie has a problem importing pictures. Any time I use the 'Import' command I either get a 'Cannot Import' message, with a number -4960, or the image that is imported is totally black. Does anyone have an idea of what is happening?

G4 with 512 MB RAM OS 10.2.8
