I have a Macbook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.4.11, with a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo. It's been running fine, but in the last few weeks, I've been trying to do some movie editing on iMovie and Final Cut Pro, and have run into some problems (I'm not sure if the problems are related or not)

The problem comes when trying to import any kind of audio into iMovie. None of the songs I attempt to import are copy or write protected, and are standard mp3s. I will use the click and drag window in iMovie, and the import box will appear, flash 'preparing...' for a sec, then the window will slide up, but no audio! If I save the movie project, the dialogue at the bottom of the iMovie window will show the name of the song, but no audio appears in the editing box.

I was also having trouble importing .mov files. It would import, and then spit it out at the end saying 'general error'. When I subsequently converted the movies in Quicktime to .dv files, on importing to iMovie successfully, the movies would be silent. I have tried importing .aiff files and other extensions, but no audio formats will import, save for those recorded live from the microphone.

Final Cut Pro was having gremlins also... the last few sessions I used it, it suddenly disliked the song I had imported... it announced it was unrendered, and would refuse to render it, saying GENERAL ERROR!. (normal .mp3 file) I tried importing an .aiff file of the same song, to see if that was the problem, but it refused to render, saying general error. When exporting from Final Cut Pro, I can use Quicktime conversion, but when I try to save it as a quicktime movie, half way through it announces general error yet again. All the clips I use are .mov, and are all imported, named and rendered properly.

Also! When I try to upload this movie onto youtube, it will always upload the audio, not the video. I export it from Final Cut Pro using Quicktime compression (to a .mov file) then I open it in quicktime and convert it to a web video .mov. What am I doing wrong?

I have tried trawling the internet, but could not find anyone with my issues. I tried reinstalling iMovie, and then reinstalling Mac Tiger all over again, with no change. I have 18 GB free on my hard drive, so it can't be a memory issue.

Please help! :(
