Importing DAT movie format file into iMo

I'm trying to put together a movie clip for the company's web site (I haven't done this before). I've been supplied with several DVDs with .DAT files. Thinking iMovies HD would be more than capable of the job, I tried importing one of the files only to have the error message ..... "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Volumes/DVD_VR?/VIDEO_RM/VIDEO_RM.DAT” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048"

The file says it's a VIDEO_RM>DAT

Is there any way I can access these files so that I can create this movie clip for our web site?

The purpose of iMovie HD is to edit digital video and to convert it to .mov or .mp4. This file can be imported into iDVD and burned to DVD. iMovie HD does not convert DVD content into editable video. For this, you need a DVD ripping app like Handbrake
