Inaccessible partition on 2 TB WD External Hard Drive

I have a late 2008 aluminum macbook and a 2 TB Western Digital external hard drive that I've been using together for over a year now. There are two partitions on the drive: one 180 GB and one 1.8 TB. They have worked flawlessly for a year+ when I access them about once a week or every 2 weeks but in the past month, data transfers between the 1.8 TB and my computer have had a drastic slowdown. What took me 5 minutes in the past now takes me an hour, if it works at all. This goes to iTunes as well since my music is on the external so if I add music to my iTunes from my computer it should send it to my external but now it begins adding them in a stop-and-start way(much lag with much spinning beach ball) until it tells me it could not access the hard drive.

A techie friend said it might be due to lack of memory on the external as I had 130 GB of the 1.8 TB left on the partition so I deleted about 100 GB's worth of things and then tried again. Still the same problem, in fact it seemed worse. I then went to Disk Utility and tried to verify/repair the partition. I faced problems the first time I tried but the 2nd it said it was repaired. Same problems. Verified again and it said the same problem that had just been fixed(Volume bitmap and Volume header issues and a corrupt drive). I've included pictures of the Disk Utility information.

I'm hoping there's a way to fix this drive without reformatting as I have all my things on it, including music, which I'm seemingly unable to transfer due to the speed.

Thanks for your help and hope to hear back soon! Let me know if you need any other information.
