Incorrect password when using FTP

Hi all, I'm new to these forums, and also quite new to Macs. I'm a technical person and have systems-administrator type skills in windows so feel free to throw some jargon at me

I've had my MBP for about 6 months now, it was intentionally bought just to learn a bit about them and how they work for my job, and since the first day playing on it, I haven't touched a Windows PC since ::ha::

I can't remember how long ago it was now, probably a month or two after I got it, I started having problems accessing FTP servers (all the servers are linux-based), whenever I try to connect using Finder I get 'incorrect password', this is the same for any server, I've tried 3 reseller servers with HeartInternet and my friends server on vapournet.com. All passwords I'm using are correct and work fine with a third-party FTP client, FileZilla is the one I'm using at the moment.

At the time it didn't really bother me as I wasn't doing much web work but at the moment I'm designing a couple of websites so I fired up Dreamweaver CS5, and then discovered that the FTP function on that was also producing the same incorrect password error.

I'm not too worried about Finder but I really need to have the Dreamweaver FTP working at the moment as it is so much easier to have it upload files as soon as it saves them.

My specs are: MBP mid-2009, 4gb ram, 2.53ghz, Snow Leopard 10.6.7 with all available updates. Dreamweaver CS5 also with all available updates installed. I do use LittleSnitch firewall and all internet access is enabled for DW. I've tried with and without passive mode enabled as well as DW performance mode on and off.

Is there anything else I should try to get it working short of an OSX reinstall?

Regards
Rob

I should add that when I first got the macbook it worked perfectly fine but as I wasn't using FTP very often at the time I'm not sure when or what could have stopped it working.

Ah I've got DW partly working now, the HeartInternet control panel has an 'FTP lock' to stop people logging in after a set time period, I had set it to always allow my IP, but my IP had since changed. Still having problems with other servers though
