Anyone know why InDesign uses .pdfs file to define pdf settings and not .joboptions files? And if they do how do I use a .joboptions file in InDesign.

Cheers

Tell me more about .joboptions files. I am unfamiliar with those. I use InDesign a lot but don't know how to answer your question. I am sure this doesn't help you, but it would be good for me to learn more about ID. :)

A .joboptions file is a settings file that you use with Acrobat Distiller. It holds all the relevant distilling options for a particular type of PDF (ie. Screen, Print, Press). Sometimes if you are supplying artwork as a PDF to a pre press department they will supply you with a .joboptions file so you can make a PDF with distiller to their spec.

What I don't understand is why you cannot use these options within InDesign, and why Indesign has its own PDF settting files as .pdfs

Anyone any ideas?

TIA

I actually saw the .joboptions today when ripping a postscript file from ID and then bringing that into Distiller. You can use the options in InDesign when you export. You can set the Export Preferences to Press, Screen, etc.

I find that the PDFX1a format is working the best (doing a test right now with a printer) because it warns you before you RIP the pdf file if there's an error. I will update this post in a few days to let you know if this format eliminates any errors.

Hope this helps somewhat. :)
