Hi,

I bought a used G5 this is my first time using a mac, I installed the drivers then removed the original graphics card and installed a ATI.

I want to run 2 monitors- so when I booted the system and plugged the two monitors, only one of my screens loaded and it showed the background of my OS. My mouse would move off the screen- so it felt as if I was on the 2nd screen. But the other screen would not load (and it was on).

How do I properly set this up?

First, boot up using one monitor until you have setup your other.

First off, Go into system preferences, which is in the dock unless you removed it, it looks like gears. If not, if you push the apple, its in there (Sorry not sure how familar you are with mac, you said it was your first time using a mac) Then go into Displays. Now i would plug in your other monitor, then on the right hand side, Your going to see "Detect Displays" Hit that, and and then it will let you choose the default monitor, ( i think) and will help you setup expose and spaces.
What OS are you running? I would presume Leopard but, i could be wrong.

:)

Congrats on the G5, is it the dual 2.0 or 2.5? I think both are watercooled, which is cool, but you see alot on ebay that are ruined, and alot of rust damage. Lol sorry to get off topic

Hi,

I put back the original apple video card (nvidia) since I could not get it to work.

When I had the new ATI in, I was unable to see any of OS, just a bg. So, the dock was not available nor was the top bar (where the apple icon is).

And did you say when you booted with both screens, one was still functional, or it was only showing background (no dock, toolbar ect.)

Haha, i guess i posted that last question a little bit too late, sorry about that.
So you have given up??
Why don't you use the original (nvidia) card, for your main, and use your ATI as the secondary?

I do not see another slot I can fit the ATI in? It's AGP.

I want to use ATI to run both monitors, since its 128MB and this Nvidia (original) is 64mb.

Oh, okay this is starting to make a little more sense, So let me try to clear everything up, When you have your ATI card in, with only ONE monitor connected it won't show the dock/toolbar?

And your ATI card has 2 spots for a monitor, okay this is my conclusion, if you have a video card with 2 slots, one of which is going to be a Master, and a secondary, Like if you were going to have 2 hard drives, one is in either cable select/master, and one would be in secondary/slave.

Does this make any sense?

Correct, so I think I was seeing the secondary (slave)- but how come the first monitor wont boot up? These are brand new monitors I got from dell.

Well, try it like this.

Put your ATI V. Card back in, and hook up only ONE monitor, try both slots and see which gets you further.

Let me know how it works
