Installing Classic

Depressed as hell
I have an iBook 600. I originally installed the operating system on this machine through the iBook recovery disks. They installed OS X.1.4 and Mac OS 9.2.2. I have OS X.2.3 on it now and expected OS 9.2.2 to continue working even after I removed applications I judged unnecessary. However, removing those applications prevented my Classic from ever starting again and I thus removed OS 9 from the system entirely, figuring I'll go ahead and just keep OS X.2.3 alone.

Today, I bought an external firewire hard drive and decided to install OS 9.2.2 on it, and older applications I want to keep like Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop Elements. I figure that a full, bootable installation would work fine if ever I chose to run it inside of Classic. I can boot fine into the OS 9 drive, but when I try to load it from Classic, it gives me a Resource Update Error. I have no idea what to do about the Resource Update Error and I was hoping someone could tell me how the hell this thing is supposed to be installed so that it just works.

I'd really love to use Classic and actually find it to be indispensable. Please help!

In order for Classic to work you need OS 9.2 installed on the same drive as OS X.

You can still do that. Boot the computer with the OS 9 CD. Then install on the OS X drive. Now restart the computer and it will boot in OS 9 (the drive that you just installed it on).

Now to tweek the OS 9 so that classic runs smooth and without all the junk, there a specific control panels and extensions you can disable. While in OS 9, go to the Apple Menu>Control Panels>Extension Manager.
Just turn off these:
Control Strip
Energy Saver
File Sharing
Infrared
Location Manager
Modem
Monitors
Mouse
Multiple users
Password Security
PowerBook SCSI Disk Mode (if installed)
Remote Access
Software Update
TCP/IP
Trackpad (if installed)
Web sharing
Dial Assist
Internet
Location manager Extensions
Apple Modem Tool
Internet V.90 Modem (and all other modem names)
LDAP Extension
NBP Plugin
NetSprocket Lib
Remote Only
Shareway IP Personal Bbnd
Software Update Extension
The DVD Player does not work in Classic, so turn off all files with DVD in the name. And the same with Disc Burner Extension
If you are not planning to connect to a network in Classic, you need to turn off: AppleTalk
Any Airport Extensions
Keychain Access
IrDA Tool
IrDALib
Apple Enet
Apple Enet DLPI Support
AppleShare
EnetShimLib
File Sharing Extension
File Sharing Library
Multi user Startup
Open Tpt Remote Access
Network Setup Extension
SLPPlugin

Save this set as Classic Speedy Start up. This should make classic a breeze for you. There are specific control panels and extensions that are needed for classic. If you need further help, let me know.:)

Thanks for helping me out Cheryl, I knew someone would come through for me. I'm not sure this will work yet since I'm not home to try it out (I didn't bring my laptop with me) but I'll definitely try it out. I copied and pasted your reply and sent it to myself in email.

Thanks again.
