I am opening this thread for all owners of a powerbook "wallstreet" who want to upgrade to "Jaguar".
I am the owner of a Powerbook G3 233 Mhz, AKA "Wallstreet".
Initially this was my configuration:
Powerbook G3 233 Mhz
512 Mb RAM (2 Kingston 256Mb SO-DIMMS - low profile)
20 Gb harddrive
I have partitoned my HD as followes:
1st partiton: MacOS X - 4 Gb
2nd partition : MacOS 9.2 - 4 Gb
3rd partiton: Data - 12 Gb
I have been running into the following problem when installing MacOS X 10.2:
When I started the installer, everything seemed to go as wished, untill I reached the point where there was only about 20-25 minutes left for the installation process. At that point the cursor froze and the screen started to fade to nutral grey. This took only 1-2 minutes.
In the meantime the installer seemed to continue its process because I could hear the CD-ROM spinning and the Harddisk working. Then this stopped after about 30 minutes and the computer just seemed to be in rest.
I have repeated this for about 5 times, just to be sure that the same thing happened again and again.
I have tried many things to solve this until I found out that my memory setup wasn't correct.
The next thing I did is downgrade my configuration to one 128 Mb S0-DIMM.
Thew I tried the installer again and everything worked out as it should. The installer finished its proicess without a problem and I could rebout into 10.2.
Next I upgraded my powerbook to 512 Mb RAM again and it started up like it should. No problem at all!
Conclusion:
The powerbook G3 233 Mhz, upgraded to its maximum memory capability (512 Mb RAM) is not supported by the OS 10.2 installer. When downgraded to 128Mb (and maybe to 192Mb, the maximum Apple discribes - I did not test that), the installer works well and 10.2 will be installed.
If you upgrade your PB to 512 Mb RAM after you installed 10.2, the software will regognice this memory and wil str up without any problem.
