installing Mac OS X with an external CD Drive ( Help!!)

Okay, Here's the scenario:

my CD drive stopped working so I've been forced to use an external Iomega USB cd-r burner to read CD's and burn. Now I'm trying to upgrade to OS X but when I try to assign the OS X cd as the startup disk an " error -27" occurs. I also tried to restart my computer and hold down the " C " key but that didnt work either. If anyone can give me a clue on how to successfully Install OS X with an external CD drive ,it would be greatly appreciated.

Try holding down the option key (alt key) to enter the available boot-devices.
