Installing OS 9 drivers onto OS X disk?

On my second hard drive, I did a clean 10.2. install. I did it by booting to the Install CD and selecting the clean install and wiping the drive. The install is fine, but an OS 9 boot CD cannot see the drive at all. I learned that that is because it does not have OS 9 drivers on it. From what I have found, the only way to install those is when formatting the disk. Is this true? I find it really hard to believe, if so. I was given no option to install them during the install from the CD. Only place I see, after the fact, is from the Disk Utility, which isn't necessary for the install.

Thanks.

I believe you are correct in the fact that you can only install the drivers after a format.

One question I have is are you absolutely positive that it's because you don't have OS 9 drivers on the disk? I have 3 HD's in my computer, 2 of which don't have the drivers installed and they show up in OS 9 fine.

Under Disk Utility it does say under the partition tab "If this option is not selected, this device cannot be used by a computer running Mac OS 9. This option does not affect Classic." That is quite odd. I've never had a problem

No, I'm not positive that's why. That's why I've been told. In the Partition tab in Disk Util, I see that option, but the checkbox is greyed out. I think that's because it's the boot partition? It's checked, but greyed out. Not sure what that actually means.

Any other suggestions, then? I really need this disk accessable from DiskWarrior and such.

Did you accidentally format it as UFS instead of HFS+? OS 9 cannot read a UFS partition no matter what you do.

ken - you say this is your second drive. what about the first one? does it have os 9 installed? if so, just drag and drop the os 9 folder to the second drive and then see if it is reconized. or at least if it will work with diskwarrior and such.

Hey, Ed.

It HAD - I have it backed up to a DVD-RW, but I think it is now a non-issue. In the machine is the Maxtor 60 gig that came with it, then the 60 gig IBM that I put in later. After running off of the IBM, I realized how much louder it is. Where I hardly ever heard the Maxtor, I always hear the IBM. So, when I reformatted the Maxtor once I was running off of the IBM, I made sure to install the OS 9 drivers onto it. Last night I used Carbon Copy Cloner to dump the IBM over to the Maxtor, since I wanted to use it as the boot disk anyway due to its being much quieter. I am now booted off the Maxtor, and sure enough, the OS 9 DW boot CD sees it. Nice. :)

I do, however, still find it really dumb that you can only install the OS 9 drivers when you format the drive, but even dumber that I was not given the option when I did the clean install.

extensions... we call them extensions in the mac world. drivers are something you find behind the wheel of a car. :D

just remember (in the future i suppose) that os 9 is a really simple os compared to osx. it drags and drops and functions just fine. i have only installed it once and yet have it on all 3 of my drives for boot purposes like using diskwarrior.

glad you got worked out, just sorry it had to be more of a hassle than it should have been.

Well then tell that to Apple. See the attached jpeg. And drivers are also something you find in the Windows and Unix worlds. In the Finder, files are in foldes. In the Terminal, files are in directories. ;)

It was a complete pain in the ass to be honest. And I am finding that there are still references to the other drive. I thought Mac OS would dynamically change the references, but some have and some have not. Oh well.
