I have an 1,8 GHZ G5 ppc, mac osx 10.3.9. I just got my new ipod and I´ve found out that I need at least osX 10.4.8 to run it. Someone has given me the advice to install osx leopard, but does anyone have an experience with this kind of installation..?

Thanks,
Charlotte, Copenhagen

Leopard should install just fine on your iMac G5 since it meets the system requirements. My recommendation would be to make sure that you upgrade your RAM to at least 1 GB.

I've been playing with Leopard today on an iMac I'm setting up at work and it has grown on me. I am considering this upgrade from 10.4.11 on my iMac G5 as well.

Hi Charlotte,

Welcome, and congrats for the new iPod :)
Which kind of installation were you considering? Here are the install or upgrade options. Upgrade install is probably the easiest and most convenient for you.
You will need the retail version of Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 install disc. Do you have one available already?
Also how much empty space do you have on your Mac's hard drive, and how much RAM do you have on that system?

Not to hijack, but I am sitting happy on 10.4.11--MacBook 2 GHz, 2 Gig RAM, 300 Gig HD--but I am feeling "10.5 Envy."

Is it worth it?

For the OP you can legally get heavily discounted 10.4 instal disc through reputable dealers.

10.5 has several advantages, including improved Spotlight file search, Time Machine - super easy backup to external hard drive, improved Network preferences layout, vastly improved speech, QuickLook, etc.

It does require more memory than 10.4, though. I think both are excellent operating systems, though I depend on 10.5's Time Machine and appreciate being able to run applications from Spotlight without having to press the arrow-down key before pressing RETURN.
