Intel based iMac not booting up

About two months ago I installed Snow Leopard and everything has been working fine up until now. Today I decided to do some updates, which (as I remember) were an iMac firmware update, OSX update, and iTunes. I downloaded these updates and left it to install while cooking dinner. When I came back the install was stuck. I left it where it was for a few hours (no change in status) and then decided to restart my computer.

My computer will only boot up to the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning circle.

I inserted my Snow Leopard installation disk but my computer won't recognize it and I can't eject it.

Does anybody know what I can do to get my iMac to start up properly?

First, did you try restarting the computer with the install disk inserted and hold down the C key?
Are you using a wireless keyboard and mouse? You need to use the old fashioned usb wired keyboard for this.
Unplug any other devices like external hard drives, especially any firewire devices.

It should start up using the install disk as start up.
