Intel iMac boot problem

I have a weird problem while booting my Intel iMac.
The system:
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB
OS X 10.4.9

The problem:
Boots to grey screen and nothing else happens

What was different before this started:
I added a Mini-DVI to Video adapter and connected to a projector.
I turned off Mirroring so I can use the projector as an extension
I changed the resolution of the second monitor to the native resolution of the projector
I did a profile calibration for both displays.
everything worked fine.
After this I launched iDVD that bounced several times on the dock but did not start. I tried to for quit iDVD after wating several minutes.
I tried to restart but iDVD wouldn't quit.
Finally the iMac restarted and got stuck on the grey screen.

The weird thing:
I can boot my iMac in this weird manner.
1. Press Power button and hold option key until boot menu shows.
2.Select one of the choices (OSX or XP).
After this the arrows will no longer work to change selection and it won't boot in any of the choices.
3. Press power button again
It will restart normally on the OS chosen in 2. and everything will work fine.

Restarting again normally will get stuck on the grey screen again!!!!

Any ideas?

thanks in advance
