Interesting! "FireWire" now the official name of the IEEE 1394 connection standard!

BARCELONA, Spain — Eager to make its high-speed digital interface the backbone of tomorrow's home networks, the 1394 Trade Association announced several initiatives at a meeting here this week to hasten the interface's adoption and settle its longstanding name-recognition problems.

The association signed a no-fee license agreement with Apple Computer Inc. to adopt the FireWire name, logo and symbol as a brand name for the IEEE 1394 connection standard, which has been given different marketing names by its roughly 170 member companies. The association also launched a working group focused on the home network, and unveiled plans to become a standards organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) by the end of 2003.

This should be good for Apple, as it shows they are supporting standards (even though iLink and the other names are technically standards as well). It should also help eliminate confusion between the names.

to adopt the FireWire name, logo and symbol as a brand name ...

It doesn't say 'the' brand name, just 'a' brand name.

I would have thought that this would make it easier for hardware manufacturers to put Firewire on the box. If they currently want to put IEEE 1394 and Firewire on the box, then they would need permission from Apple and the IEEE, but with the IEEE licensing the Firewire brand, hardware manufacturers can go to a single place for permission.

GRRRR... i hate iLink... frickin' weak little 4 pin piece of crap connector... :p

I've got your i.Link right here!

Interesting that they only just started using the FireWire logo as an official one. I've seen an ad for an external PC FireWire drive (actually it was an external casing to attach a standard internal drive) with a huge FireWire logo covering the entire top.

iLink isn't 100% 1394 standard and so it would be foolhardy to use that as an official 1394 brand name. It is very close, but some people have found a few hardware incompatibilities out there.

i use i.Link for my Sony camcorder... works DAMN WELL!

Last night, I was watching an "As Seen on TV PC" informercial (I have to. They're so dumb it's hard not to watch) and they called it FireWire. For the first time. They always called it IEEE 1394 (Or whatever). Glad to see Apple's finally getting recognition.
