Interesting review of Jaguar on theregister.co.uk

i've never read anything before from the register.

it is interesting to say the least. and although i think it is a bit harsh,
there are some truths to the article. i do find using the UI at times
a bit trying as it is slower than my experience on win2k.... of course,
im not trying to start a flame war. i was a long time PC addict, and
Mac hater. now i have seen the proverbial light and migrated
to the mac universe :)

im curious to hear other opinions

Well, such positive points seemed to be overlooked, i.e. I have installed Jaguar on my LCD iMac and seen a nice speed difference. I have also installed it on my G4 400 and noticed a HUGE speed difference... and Quartz Extreme not even supported!

Nothing at all was marked within the article such as these issues (which are very considerable since not everyone has the Quicksilver 733 that the writer was grumbing about).

Nothing mentioned about how significant a departure Sherlock has undergone, etc etc.

Just the little niggling problems focused on. But, some of these points are indeed warranted. However, I get the impression that this guy is upset that he had to depart from using his beloved OS9, a fact confirmed in his constant references to how good Mac OS used to be (conveniently forgetting the downsides of crashes, non-true multi-tasking etc.)

The article is full of "left-handed" compliments (apologies to lefties; I'm one). This is one of those articles where the author is going to great lengths to find fault, despite the fact that he obviously loves the OS. Dumb.

As a writer, I find that 'article' (and I'm using the term very loosely here) not only very biased, but equally poorly written.

The author is clearly tripping over himself - and inelegantly at that - to point out very minor flaws in an otherwise successful OS.

The best part is when he mentions his biggest beef (something to do with Fink, whatever that is) and in the very next sentence says that he can't complain too much about it.

My biggest complaint about the article is how it is written, but I guess I can't complain too much when it's written by a blowhard.

One big oversight of this article:

The fact that the majority of people that have gone out and bought Jag over the weekend (100,000 and counting)... seems to think it is a resounding success!

Therefore I can only assume this guy is not in touch with the commonner Mac user, and does not visit forums with a passion such as this one, every day:D

I read the review and, as is usual with Register articles, nothing really tracked with my own everyday experiences, until the end, when the mule-slow web browsing was mentioned.

That kinda lit me up.

Someone's gotta fix that, it really IS slower than PCs.

eshine

the one TRUTH in that article is the annoying lack of sorting by date modified in column view. Why can't apple do that???? Sortable column views, c'mon!!!!

The web browsing experience on mac has been sh*t for a long time, and Chimera (Navigator) fixes all of that. It just needs to hit version 1.0 with no major bugs and web browsing on mac will be on par with Windows (or at least very very close)

Now... with the slow GUI... well... Quartz Extreme fixes a lot of things, so basically, having a new mac will fix the GUI now. So within a couple years (MAX), GUI speed should be solved, for everybody, except people with very old macs.

When the GUI is super snappy, and web browsing is good, mac will pretty much rule in all counts. Of course PC people can still claim lack of games.
