Internet connectivity keeps dropping

I hope someone can help.

I changed over to broadband just over a year ago. At the time we had a PC as well as the eMac, so we bought a Belkin 54G router/modem and set up a wireless network. All worked well. The PC is no longer here, but we had for sometime kept the same set up and experienced no problems for several months. Suddenly the connections started to drop. It took a whole day to actually connect at all initially. MY ISP reported said they had no problems, and I was able to get my emails from my mobile phone. Since then the connection dropping has got worse and worse and now drops every few minutes. I have to keep unplugging the router and clearing it for several minutes, although this is not successful everytime. I downloaded a virus checker and eradicated a virus. That has made no difference at all. When the connection is working it seems to slow down quickly.

I am having to write this on word and copy and paste because I can’t stay connected long enough to write the message. Registering has been a problem too!

When I go to the router page connecting by the number 192 etc address, sometimes it says it is ASDL connected other times it says it isn’t. When the connection dies most of the time the lights go out on the router, but sometimes they still flash. At the moment as I write they are flashing quickly but there is no connection.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have bought a cable to make a wired connection. Do I need another network card for my eMac other than the Airport Extreme one for this kind of connection? Will it help at all?

First, call your isp and ask for a line test. Is your phone on the same line?, if so ask them to check for a noisy line. If you call using the phone is it "poping or cracking", this is a symtom of it.

Do you have a line filter, if so change it, cost is minimal.
Download the birklin update ( firmware) install it see if this helps.

post back any progress

'I downloaded a (unprovided name) virus checker and eradicated a (unprovided name) virus. ' - you (most likely) eradicated a Microsoft Windoze related virus.

'I have bought a cable to make a wired connection. Do I need another network card for my eMac other than the Airport Extreme one for this kind of connection' - no. Ethernet and Airport Extreme are two difference means of data transmission.
Turn OFF Airport, and plug the Ethernet cable into the respective connectors of the modem / router and the eMac.
In 'System Preferences' (via the 'Apple, System Preferences' menu item, or in the '/Applications/' folder), select the 'Network' utility, create a new 'Location:', and set the 'Show:' popup menu to 'Built-in Ethernet', then click hte 'Configure...' button.
Click the 'PPPoE' tab, click on 'Connect using PPPoE' check box to place a check mark in it, enter the needed information (provided by your ISP) - in the various textedit fields, you may / may not have to click on the 'TCP/IP' tab and enter any respective 'DNS Servers:' addresses (provided by your ISP), and then click on the 'Apply Now' button.

You may / may not have to turn OFF the modem / router and eMac, wait about 30 seconds, turn ON the modem / router, wait about 5+ seconds, turn ON the eMac.

'Will it help at all?' - using the Ethernet cable to establish an internet connection should help determine if the drop connections are Mac to modem / router via Airport related, or not.
