Internet Explorer 6 - is it irrelevent?

OS X Supreme Being
OK, with all the talk surrounding Safari getting tabs and Chimera becoming Camino, nobody has really talked about what's gonna happen with Internet Explorer.

Will Microsoft to continue development of it now that Apple has their own in house browser? It was rumored to be ready for release months ago, but some reports say it's been "shelved" indefinitely.

One thing is for sure - Microsoft sure spent some development resources on MSN for OS X, which looks like it features a new MSN branded version of IE.

Does anybody really care if IE is now a dead product on the Mac?

Personally, I dont...

If IE came out with something just as fast as Safari... I am sure they would keep a market share of the Mac market. Some pople like the rendoring of IE over Safari.

Or preferably fast as Camino / Chimera (=faster than Safari) .. and with pop-up blocking, selective image blocking (that afaik isn't yet even in Safari) etc candies.. yea. Dream on. I can't imagine Exploiter without the pop-ups etc. :D

I've said it a long time ago. The Macintosh browser market seems to have simply waited to be overrolled by Safari. Nobody managed to create a decent browser that 'had it all'. Apple's approach is right...

Microsoft could still do something, if they wanted. But I guess they have lost interest.

Yes, that MSN-link managed to give me a headache seeing their flash animation that presented it.. Do I want an XP styled IE-browser, M$-address book, M$-email, M$-calendar, M$-.. .. in my Mac?? No. I have all that with OS X without M$ and it's faster and doesn't look like XP or Mandrake. :)

Alas, many of us will care so long as those FrontPage dweebs out there build web sites that require IE for no other reason than they don't know any better.

This was quite a problem a few years ago, but I'm kind of surprised to say I haven't had ANY problems with being able to view a site that requires IE in a long time.

Safari still has some problems with certain sites (banking in particular), but any browser based on Gecko seems to render stuff just fine. There are times when a site has IE specific additions, but usually it will work minus the IE only features just fine in Gecko.

i agree with scott here, if they released something with features comparible to safari and camino, then they would probably regain marketshare on the mac (if they dont already have it)

IE works with almost everywebsite, even though its ugly and renders wrong half the time... but since its "IE" it gets more attention from web developers etc  :(

Remember... Even IF Microsoft releases a new version of IE for the Mac, the chances of Apple bundling with the default OS installation are slim. The chances of it remaining the default browser in a default installation (once Safari is finished) are just about nil.

Safari has already captured between 40-50% of all OS X users, and it's still in beta and has to be downloaded seperately. Imagine what it's OS X marketshare will be once it's installed by default and renders pages flawlessly...

I am exclusively using Safari, even though there are a couple bugs I hate. IE has been nothing but a PitA, but I got my alternative. I only use it for testing sites.

Go back and parse my words carefully. I said "required" and "don't know any better." By that I mean that the site works only with IE and not with any other browser. I also mean that this was deliberate action born out of ignorance. I am taling about people for whom the phrase "W3C-compliant" draws a blank stare. Not all web sites are commercial, but some are critical to my job.

Internet Explorer… I had *almost* forgotten this program was still on my disk. In fact, I don't even know why: I think I keep it for web banking and stuff like that. Oh, maybe for testing webpages, although I've lost that habit.

Microsoft has strictly no interest in paying people to develop a new Mac browser, as the Mac browser market is already the place of a big fight between Safari and Chimera.

Don't forget the 'rarely-browsers' here. There are a lot of older people using Macs and browsing the internet. And they're using IE until Apple bundles Safari with the OS/Macs. Camino doesn't even come to their minds... Depending on whether Apple will _also_ bundle a new IE with Macs/Mac OSX when Safari is finished, IE will still keep some of its users.

is it possible that instead of a new IE they are just going to release MSN? (i know its different, but it IS still a browser, just with a BUNCH of added shtuffs)

Internet Explorer 6 is being stalled until the summer
MSN for os x looks so much better!

There are a number of sites/products that I see in the corporate environment which specifically disallow any browsers except IE. And on other sites where there are just one or two features that are IE-specific, without those features the sites become completely useless. I wish my brother and sister web designers/developers would cut that sh!t out...
