What is actually very odd about Mac "security" coverage is the fact that there are thousands and thousands of articles written about this subject, and yet the total number of Mac OS X systems exploited (ever) can be counted on one hand of an absent minded carpenter.
While the ratio of coverage/effort given to this subject by the media seems beyond obsessive... the simple fact of the matter is that
true security threats for Mac users are completely unnoticed (and uncovered) by these people.
As such, maybe it is time to bring these threats to us Mac users to the forefront and address ways of avoiding them.
For example, Mac users who smoke run a very real risk of dying of lung cancer. Mac users in Iraq run a risk of being killed by car bombs. Mac users who walk alone at night in bad neighborhoods (specially carrying their Macs with them) run the risk of being held up. Mac users (on the whole) run a very high risk of having their Mac stolen (this risk is more than an order of magnitude higher than any
virus/worm threat to your Mac... so take this one very seriously). Mac users run the risk of being struck by lightning, hit by cars, dying in a plane crash and attacked by sharks.
And while documented confirmation of this next one is about as sketchy as confirmation of
virus/worm threats to your Mac, there is reason to believe that Mac users are at risk of alien abduction too.
And this is just the smallest sample of security threats that we as Mac users face every day!
Please people, be careful out there!
... and remember to take your vitamins too.
