...it's just not what was expected!

Mac Rumors seemed to suggest (based upon a Gizmodo article) that an iPhone announcement was due today. Well, Linksys has released a VoIP phone named "iPhone." There is a BBC article on the release, and Linksys has a press release on the subject.

I'm surprised that Apple let that one go, to be honest. They can always use a different name, if they will indeed produce a mobile phone as the rumors suggest, but I'm still surprised!
 
Hm... Now we'll have to rephrase all those rumours to "iTalk", "iPod phone" or something like that. ;) Or let's just ignore Linksys' iPhone. They're just piggybacking on all those iPhone rumours now, aren't they...
 
I think Apple are moving away from the iProduct naming scheme anyway. It really is getting old IMO.

If this phone were to have some sort of lite version of OS X, perhaps MacPhone would be a more fitting name?

Nah, its only just over ten years since the first iMac was launched. And its only lent itself to a couple of hundred cheap knock-offs like the iDog, iWalk, iVibe and iSore.

I really hope Apple let the iProduct naming scheme die gracefully in this coming year.

Yea, it is. I never understood it, what does the "i" mean? :S
 
The original "i" stood for Internet since the original iMacs were touted as computers that were "internet ready".
 
I think the iPod name was brilliant because it can be anything. Obviously, it was touted as a music player but now we have movies, tv shows, music videos, workout programs, audiobooks, and so much more.

I also think the iMac is an appropriate name for the machine since the main focus still revolves around the internet. We are just used to the internet now so we don't notice. But most of the software installed on the iMac needs access to the internet in some form or another.

If they do make an iPhone or MacPhone I want it to be revolutionary but not forget its primary purpose: to call people and talk to them. I think a lot of phones out there do too much by trying to be a camera, mp3 player, instant messenger..etc. Some of these features are great but as we saw in the iTunes Phone it is not a solution. Why did the iPod succeed? Because it did one thing and it did it well. Then Apple moved on to adding extra features. Does it need Mac OS X? Probably not. The iPod has its own operating system that works fine with Mac OS X. As long as I can take it out of my pocket and it 'just works' I am happy.
