I have been going through my collection of almost 10,000 photos assigning Places to them. It's hard to believe that iPhoto is so poorly designed as to place a fixed limit to the number of Places in the library, but it appears to be so. If I add a new Place, suddenly many of my photos lose their association with their Places. As far as I can tell, none of the Places is lost from the library, but something like half of the photos, which is to say thousands of them, have lost their associations with the photos.
The only, and unsatisfactory, solution to this has been to restore the library from Time Machine and cease adding new Places.
Suggestions? (Other than finding a better photo manager than iPhoto '11.)
