I backed up my pictures folder, and then when I had some problems with my user name & had to recreate another one, iphoto would not let me import my iphotos from my backed up folder.
The message is:

Unreadable files: 1
The following files could not be imported (they may be unrecognized file type or the files my not contain valid data).

/Users/**myusername**/Pictures/iPhotoLibrary


I never touched anything in any of the folders, i simply dragged the backed up folder to my user folder & tried to import.

how did you try to import the pictures ? is it with File > add to library ?

which version of iPhoto, OS and mac are you using ? infos could help to sort you out
 
Hello. I'm having a similar problem. Same error message. I believe it thinks the photos are an alias, and not the original file. I was also able to import by dragging the pictures opened in Preview, using IPhoto 4, but not in 5. I wish I hadn't upgraded yet. Thanks
