I doubt they well drop the the 5 gig model because up north here in canada it is like a 200 dollar price increase and it weould not seem smart for apple to losse about half of potential buyers because right now i can get a hi end player for about 300 without as big drive and less options such has how the ipod can be used for file trensfers and so on ....

If they were to drop the 5GB iPod, they would likely drop the price of the 10 and 20GB iPods.

Thus, the 10GB iPod would now cost the same as the 5GB iPod did and so on.

They would then need a high-end iPod to even out the mix. This is where the iPod II is likely to come in.

since they didn't upgrade the 5 gig to the motionles wheel and nifty case and headphones, my guess is they're weeding it out.
the next lineup will be:
10 Gig
20 Gig
10 Gig Color
20 Gig Color

btw this is your second thread about the iPod. why? :)

and: yes, the iPod 5G hasn't been updated to the new feature set, but mainly to drive sales of the 10G model up. (there hadn't been too many left over or anything, the 5G iPod was still in production after the introduction of the new 10 and 20G models.) it's not any more, though. you'll find less and less 5G models in the sales channels until the end of the Holiday season.

Just a thought... if they are able to keep the 5G ipod, and drop the price further to make it affordable to those who are looking for a high capacity mp3 player (without really tapping the use of it as a FW HDD) and maybe to carry with them the Address Book, I think we will see more students affording them.

More affordable means more Apple product users. Though it does not make iPod Win users Mac users, but well, they are carrying the Apple logo around. :D
