iPod battery performance cold conditions

My car stereo sucks @ss so I used my iPod in the car.
I recently charged up my iPod battery and headed to
the mountains to get some boardin' in.

Each time now (3x) when I come back at the end of
the day, the iPod claims it has a dead battery. Once
it even locked up on me before the battery warning
came up. (Holding down menu&play w/o the fw cord
will still reboot it, if you forgot your fw cable.)

This was after 1-2 hours of playing, followed by 5-6
hours of sub-freezing temps. I imagine that this
can't be too good for the battery.

Just so you know...

ps - how hot does your iPod get when recharging?

oops- from tech specs:
Operating temperature: 32° to 113° F (0° to 45° C)
Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 158° F (-20° to 70° C)
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)

I was probably pushing these...
