iPod Deal??

Hi.

I'm wanting to get an iPod (I even had a dream that involved me having one! :p ) and saw that Dell is selling them. Well I was going to get the 5gig from apple.com for 299 but on Dells site they sell them for 399 - 40 dollars off with free shipping. So a 10 gig iPod at dells site would be about the same as what apple would charge me for a 5 gig!

My question is this. The Dell one is the PC version. Does it matter? Is the only difference the software included?

heres the link

Also is this the one with the touch sensitive scroll pad (the newer one) or is it the old 10gb they are getting rid of?

Thanks!

The model number on the Dell site matches the current PC version of the 10gb iPod on Apple's site, which does feature a touchwheel. I believe the touchwheel was introduced at the same time as the wired remote, anyway.

Aside from the different software included, the PC version iPod came with a 4-pin to 6-pin Firewire adapter.

The PC version iPod has its hard disk preformatted to a FAT32 file system, which can be reformatted to HFS+ for use with a Mac, but not back to FAT32 again (!)

Apple warns, though:
"Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple."

hmm yea i think i'll pass. I didn't know the hd was formatted and all that. And i'd rather have the touch sensitive wheel on the new one if i'm going to pay that much. I hope the price goes down sometime this year. The 5 gig is unavailable at apple.com so maybe thats a good sign! I'd like the 10 gig i think 5 gig i might outgrow since the mp3s on my computer total about 4gigs.

Thanks for the info though.

I know the feeling ... my Mp3 library is at 12 gig and my budget is at zero gig! My iBook has a 10 gig drive, so all my music resides on CDs which pretty much defeats the purpose of the whole thing to begin with. :)
