Has anyone heard of an SDK to create iPod apps, past present or future? (Short of sending my resume to Steve Jobs?)

No, but I heard someone made an iPod Breakout level editor at the MacHack conference.

it would be nice if it were possible to code for the iPod more extensivly (especially game wise). If the iPod is becomming a PDA-like device (with clock, calender, contacts, etc), why not expand the entertainment side of it (music) with some simple games... I would love to see asteroids or centepede on the iPod...

I think the problem with this thing is, that there is no real partition, where the system and the programmes (calendar, clock, contact etc.) are on. the “partition” where the system is on seems to have no file system, it just starts with the machine code. So I think everything is packed into one “code cluster”. Cause of that you wouldn’t write a programme for the ipod but a patch, that its os would include a new feature. That would be possible, but I don’t think that apple will bring out a SDK therefore.

Tsk. That bites.
Still, you CAN store files on the iPod in HD mode. They ought to modify the iPod's 'OS' so that standalone program modules could be put into a specifically-named folder on the HD partition, and then provide a choice on one of the iPod's menus to launch these programs.

yeah .. if apple would change the OS that way you could do that. but the question is - will apple do that - . i don't think that apple would do. cause if they do they would have to create an interface for the programmer. they at least would have to create calls for file system changes, menus, and at least low level grapic calls. that would mean, that they aren't so flexible in OS changes anymore. and they would have to create more exception catch methodes to prevent OS crashes causes by the "add'ones"

So true, so true. Still, didn't someone manage to hack together an address book for the ipod BEFORE Apple went ahead and integrated it themselves?

Yeah .. but this wasn't a system hack i think but a system featur hack. So they used a feature of the ipods os to integrate a address book. At the moment some guys are working to crack the OS. they were already able to change the text of the menupoints.

the system has a ckechsum but this was crack by them.
now they go ahead an try to reverse engeniere the system to find out how to display things on the display.
